African love symbols are rare. The most beautiful African symbol for love is the Adinkra symbol – “Love does not get lost on it’s way home” The other very popular symbol relating to passion is the Sankofa symbol which is an African Adinkra Symbol. Love symbols are used in jewelry, on letters and tattoos. Humans seem to love representations of love – and in African music this is very obvious – in fact, in all music, love is the most widely used theme. Music from Africa is a fast growing industry – and is showing the other side of this wild continent.

The symbol for love varies widely around the world – this particular design is widely used on African textile prints by the Akan peoples. Adinkra symbols are simply the best symbols on the African continent, loved by African people. The motif appears in many African pictures and on many African music covers and Cd’s.

Sankofa and African Adinkra Symbols

Sankofa is represented by the symbols of a bird with its head turned toward the back removing an egg from it’s back, and also a stylised shape of a heart. Adrinka symbols are arguably the most well known and loved African symbols due to the wonderful graphics and meanings. The symbols were originally used on African textile prints as patterns and have morphed into widely used African symbols used on everything from glassware to wall hangings. Jewelry with Sankofa is also widely used.

The meaning, or proverb linked to these symbols is “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten” – directly translated Sankofa means “go back and take”. From an American African perspective it is a highly regarded symbol. Of all the Adinkra symbols, and there are many, this one holds a special place in many African hearts. Used in in jewelry as a symbolic statement, the Sankofa symbol is easy to construct and incorporate into rings or pendants.

Go back and take - Adinkra symbol "SANKOFA"

It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten - Sankofa

The symbol is widely used on African textile prints – bolts of cloth, and many other items. It has another variation which is a heart – In terms of African symbols the Akan people of Gana have the most beautiful and meaningful symbols, in my opinion. South African symbols by comparison fall far short. The African people in general have symbols for almost everything – most of them not catalogued like the Adinkra symbols. The most well known South African symbols are nothing to boast about – but there are a few gems. African masks with meanings seem to be well known in South Africa.

From Southern Africa we have the Nyami Nyami and the Power mask – both very strong South African symbols – although the Nyamnyami is from Zimbabwe and Zambia – it has found a place in the hearts of visitors to S.A.

African Love symbol

Silver and gold Adinkra symbol

These African Adinkra symbols represent love – The African Love symbol means “Love does not get lost on it’s way home” The Akan people certainly had a poetic way with words, and manage to capture beautiful sentiments in their symbolism. South African symbols fall short in the symbolic meanings and poetry of words, seeming to concentrate on the harsher sides of reality. The Sankofa symbol sums up the depth of the Akan people, showing a kind and thoughtful side. All of the Adinkra symbols have some gem of wisdom, and they all started when people were looking for African textile prints.

The in-turned spears show that while aggression will never be flaunted; there is power as needed. In the context of any relationship, the idea refers to protecting it’s oneness, also the family along with the home. It denotes a preparedness to battle for your companion and your beliefs. African pictures make good tattoos.

MIELIE Anything that is worthwhile and that is growing needs to be nurtured. This really is apparent with things like crops or flowers but much less apparent with things like strategies, ideals or aspirations, which also grow as well as develop. Lots of facets of culture, such as social conscience for instance, are slow to develop and demand to be nurtured. This kind of nurturing requires patience, care, attention and understanding. Specific aspects of existence, such as good human relationships along with a excellent marriage require a significant amount of sustained nurturing if they are to stay vital as well as satisfying.
African charms and African Symbols. These African charms in silver make great African gifts and the pictures make nice African tattoos. This range of African jewelry made up by South African goldsmiths was developed around the myths and symbols of the African continent. Some of the silver charms are made for African spells – although they would need a sangoma to help them work. Otherwise they make a fantastic African gift for visitors to Africa and South Africa. The male fertility charm is a rare mask indeed – the female fertility mask is commonly seen.

African wedding rings are not found easily – this African ring has symbols from Africa all the way around – the titanium bangles and rings are inscribed with “KE MO Aforika” – which means “I am an African” – and considering we are all one way or another from Africa – it makes a great ring for a man.

African charms against spells and voodoo are often drawn from African symbols and symbolism – the meaning plays an important role, but there are not many pictures of the charms – the real thing exists but they have not been researched and photographed.
